Daniel Rivero

Social Media Editor

Daniel Rivero grew up on music, skateboarding, and Cuban coffee, and those three things continue to define him, at least on the weekends.  A proponent of the power of people, he has long been fascinated with what moves populations to action and conversation.

He has the vision of creating an engaged online community revolving around the issues that affect the region through various media platforms.  While South Florida is a notoriously diverse area, he trusts that there is no better place than online to come together as a community.  Working both in the newsroom and on the communications sides of the media world has given him an understanding of the importance of storytelling in marketing and communications.

Daniel Rivero is the social media editor at WLRN Public Radio and Television for South Florida, and a freelance copywriter for MTV Tr3s.  He is a graduate of Florida International University, and a founding committee member of the annual Pop-Up Piano Miami project.

Quoting the revolutionary icon might not be such big deal in some media markets, but in South Florida it is a different story.  Here, he is remembered mostly as a murderer and oppressor of political dissent in Cuba's Revolution.

Does Miami Beach Need A Reality Check On Racism?

Credit Sammy Mak / WLRN

When WLRN put out a call last week asking Miami Beach residents if they were staying or leaving during Urban Beach Weekend, the overwhelming majority said that they would be leaving until Monday or Tuesday.

Among the most frequently cited reasons for the exodus: a recent history of violence, traffic and noise, along with the event bringing a "bad crowd" into town.

South Florida Offers Help, Hope To Oklahoma Tornado Victims

Our biggest rivals in the NBA? No matter. When tragedy strikes we stand together.

When devastation on the scale of what we are seeing in Oklahoma City hits, the whole world feels the pain.

Especially in Miami, where we have had our city leveled and destroyed at various times in our history, notably Hurricane Andrew in August of 1992, which we recently revisited in a radio documentary.

Old Miami Arena Site Gets New Plans; Here's A Timeline Of The Property

Credit @Matt_Roy on Instagram
Professional skateboarder Danny Fuenzalida kick-flips over recently paved and painted bench bumps.

Did you know that if you dig deep enough into the property records of any piece of real estate in the state of Florida you will find that all the land originally belonged to the Spanish Crown?

But ever since the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1821, land ownership has been like a hot potato, changing hands incessantly.  Indeed, taking a deep look into any one piece of property (likely where you live, included) will reveal a surreal story for the ages.

Miami is called the Magic City for a reason.

We live in one of the best cities, proven by the fact that millions of people vacation here every year. But even in paradise, we get caught up in our daily routines. We let weeks or even months go by without heading to the beach, closing our eyes and enjoying the sounds, aromas and tastes that make our home such a worldwide draw.

We're here to help.

Behind the allure of bikinis and board shorts, Miami residents possess a sea of Star Trek costumes.

At least that's one conclusion you might draw from a recent article in Movodo, a real estate website.  The criteria used to determine the winners, while not scientific, is telling of the "nerd demographic" that our city has nurtured over the years.  Here is a quick rundown of the data used to determine the winners:

After Yoani Sanchez: What Changes Linger In The Miami Air?

Credit Patricia Sagastume / WLRN
Author Daniel Rivero with prominent Cuban dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez during her recent visit to the Miami Herald's editorial board

Seven or eight years ago, during a sociology class at Miami-Dade College, the professor asked us to write a sociological history of our lives. It was the first time I thought long and hard about my life in the scheme of history, about the chain of events that brought me to my life in Miami as a Cuban-American.

For people of my generation, you simply could not avoid getting a crash course on Cuban politics and the dream of a free Cuba.  The reason we are here. We are here because of him. Because of Fidel.

Shaded area indicates the reach of Ultra's sounds. This is not a scientific map, but rather one based on observations. We drew the lines from the point where ambient sounds from the urban environment become louder than the music itself.

For more than a hundred thousand electronic dance music fans from across the world, Ultra Music Festival is heaven on earth. But tell that to the people who live and work close by.

Standing outside the gates of Ultra Music Festival, an audiologist and her colleague are staring at their sound level meters.  The devices track the decibel level of the atmosphere, giving us some unsettling clues as to how safe the environment is for your ears.

After an extended buildup, the beat finally drops.  As the fans go crazy, the bass starts to pump.  Even a few hundred feet from the stage, casual conversation is strained.

Four Musical Ways People Celebrated Hugo Chavez's Death

Credit Brenda Medina / El Nuevo Herald
Cubans and Venezuelans celebrate and pop champagne in front of Versailles. They scream 'Viva Venezuela! Abajo Castro!'

All Tuesday night, we listened to South Floridians react to the death of Hugo Chavez. Many (most) of the reactions were celebratory. Those celebrations took the form of songs, drive-by shoutings and apparently an accordion death ballad.

Below is a roundup of the most colorful reactions to the death of Venezuela's oft-beloved and perhaps equally hated leader.
