Joseph Cooper

Host Topical Currents

WLRN Radio's Joseph Cooper says producing and hosting Topical Currents is the most rewarding experience of his long radio career, which began at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in the 1970s.

"It's now an obsession, but I never thought talk radio would be in my future. The wide, wide range of topics, research and reading keeps me hustling all week," he says. "It's similar to a daily newspaper column because, essentially, we write an essay to frame each show before conducting the interviews and taking calls and then it all starts over again for the next day's program."

Topical Currents is put together by a small production team, which includes producer Richard Ives and technical director Bonnie Berman. Syndicated food and dining columnist Linda Gassenheimer frequents the program, as well as a handful of expert regular contributors and regional reporters.

Topical Currents is a sub-tropical blend of regional issues and politics, local profiles, author interviews, "At Your Service" programs, South Florida history and any topic listeners might banter about around the proverbial "water cooler." It was first broadcast in January 1999.

Cooper is often asked to name his "favorite" interview subject.

"Hmmmm," he says with the hint of a smile. "Not necessarily the celebrities or famous authors but the one I've just done. Well usually.

“Drunk Tank Pink:” Unexpected Forces Which Influence Lives; Linda Gassenheimer’s Food & Dining.

4/03/14 - Topical Currents begins with NYU marketing professor Adam Alter.  His research focuses on the intersection of behavioral economics, marketing and psychology. Most of us think we act independently from the world around us.  Alter refutes the notion in his book, DRUNK TANK PINK: AND OTHER UNEXPECTED FORCES THAT SHAPE HOW WE THINK, FEEL, AND BEHAVE. It’s been found that pink surroundings make people more passive, and less prone to violence. ADAMALTERAUTHOR.COM

LOVE ILLUMINATED: Exploring Life’s Most Mystifying Subject

Topical Currents is with New York Times “Modern Love” columnist Daniel Jones. No subject in human history has been more thoroughly examined, yet it’s still as little understood since the time of Shakespeare.

Columnist Jones has had some 50,000 letters cross his desk:  deluged with scheming cheaters, hopeless romantics and fierce devotees. He’s written, LOVE ILLUMINATED:  Exploring Life’s Most Mystifying Subject.

MIAMI: CITY OF THE FUTURE

T.D. Allman

03/11/14 - Tuesday' s Topical Currents is with writer and journalist T.D. Allman.  Twenty-five years ago, he wrote the landmark book, MIAMI:  CITY OF THE FUTURE.  The 1980s was a period when Miami took many shots to the chin:  as “paradise lost,” and a drug-riddled pariah among urban centers.  Twenty-five years later, Allman has revised and updated the book.  And still finds Miami a harbinger of an evolving America.  His new book is Finding Florida: The True History of the Sunshine State. That’s Topical Currents . . . Tuesday at 1pm.
