The Best Of British TV! Doc Martin, Scott & Bailey, Midsomer Murders
On Mondays, WLRN presents some of the best of British television, a mix of droll comedy and compelling drama.
In Doc Martin, popular British actor Martin Clunes stars as Martin Ellingham, whose truculence and tactlessness cause mayhem in a small Cornish community. Scott & Bailey is a thrilling investigative drama exploring the personal and professional lives of two female detectives, while Midsomer Murders, based on the novels of Caroline Graham, has a lush visual style, quirky characters, ubiquitous red herrings and a rural countryside that recall classic British crime mysteries of the past:
Doc Martin: The Family Way (8:00 p.m.)
Martin's somewhat difficult parents come to visit from their home in Portugal. They have not spoken to one another for seven years and Martin finds his mother to be very withdrawn. His father, a retired surgeon, is somewhat dismissive of Martin's decision to become a small town doctor.
Things come to a head when they all visit Aunt Joan and the real reason for his father's visit comes to light. Martin also deals with Maureen Tacy who has been putting on weight despite attempts at dieting. Martin's conclusions are both surprising and delightful. Louisa's friend Danny has a serious attack while renovating his new home but Martin comes to the rescue.
Scott & Bailey: Ordinary Women, An Exraordinary Job (9:00 p.m.)
Detective Constable Rachel Bailey is 30, down-to-earth, noisy, argumentative and single. Her partner, Detective Constable Janet Scott, is 40, a diplomat and a thinker, as well as being a wife and mother. They both work for the Murder Investigation Team of Manchester Metropolitan Police and, despite the obvious differences between them, the fact that they are often thrown together in difficult situations means they have developed a robust friendship.
Each episode sees Rachel and Janet face a serious crime that is both challenging and emotionally difficult as well as cope with their own complex personal lives. Scott & Bailey is an honest and powerful crime drama series. Tonight, the team searches for a killer when the body of an eight-year-old boy is discovered.
Midsomer Murders: Painted In Blood (10:00 p.m.)
This popular British television series stars John Nettles as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and Daniel Casey as Detective Sergent Gavin Troy.
While Joyce Barnaby joins a painting society, her husband DCI Barnaby is concerned with a local operation designed to clamp down on burglary. When Joyce finds the body of Ruth Fairfax, an elderly lady who is part of an art class, inspector Barnaby is pulled off the case and replaced by members of the National Intelligence Squad. At first detective Troy is dazzled by the visiting detectives who take him under their wing, but eventually he becomes disillusioned and helps Barnaby solve the case.
