Program Brings Financially Friendly Grocery Tips To Food Deserts

FLIPANY, or Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth, is taking grocery-shopping to another level. The non-profit organization wants to teach Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County residents how to cook healthy, affordable meals with their groceries.

FLIPANY has been promoting healthy shopping ideas and food tips to South Florida for six years, particularly in communities in by food deserts. After the Affordable Care Act passed out grants to build more supermarkets in these vast wastelands of food, FLIPANY has been active in teaching residents ways to make the most out of their money.

Last week, FLIPANY organized a tour at a Winn-Dixie in Miami Gardens. For the first half, they showed participants tips and tricks to create healthy meals . The tips could be as simple as rinsing out canned vegetables to get rid of extra sodium. In the second half, FLIPANY tasked participants with making a meal using each food group -- with a $10 Winn Dixie gift card.
