The Public Radio Listener's Alternative Cultural Guide To Ultra Weekend

Some people like to flee downtown Miami when the bass hits the town. It does get pretty loud during Ultra, after all. But there's a way to embrace the city and all of its noise.

During Miami Music Week, some earnest, intellect-stimulating events sneak their way through EDM's unruly buzz. Maybe it'll just be you and another bespectacled, mustachioed friend. Maybe you'll run into one of us.

  • Art, Poetry and Justice with Danny Glover: Gramps Bar, 176 NW 24th St., Miami
The Florida Student Justice Alliance chose the right hipster hangout to hold a labor-rights-and-art palooza. Gramps is the Wynwood bar that took Wood Tavern's place as the cool alternative drinking spot, but this Wednesday at 7 p.m., it will be a center for poetry, art and mild civil disobedience (possibly? This is hosted by activists.). Note: Danny Glover is not Donald Glover.
  • Hatsume Fair: Morikami Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach
This isn't just about anime and costume play. To celebrate the start of spring, the Morikami lets blossom all its slices of Japanese tradition, including bonsai pruning and tea ceremonies. Of course, there will be some anime displays there, so maybe you want to dress up, although we're not sure many pub radio fans do. Send us your pics? Starts Saturday at 11 a.m.
  • A Really Random Happy Hour: Freehand Miami, 2727 Indian Creek Drive, Miami Beach
This is another Saturday option, and here there's free vodka. But it's still culturally focused and acceptable by public-radio standards, because cocktails are in and making them is a craft. You can also dance here, as awkward and glorious as that may look.
  • Kevin Johansen + the Nada: New World Center, 500 17th St., Miami Beach
Here's the kind of international artist public radio listeners yearn to see: An Argentine rocker born to an Alaskan mother who performs tango-infused melodies is your Ultra-weekend symphony this Saturday at 8 p.m. Feel culturally enriched just by reading the description on the New World Center's page.
