Iconic White Tiger At Zoo Miami Is Euthanized

After a nearly 20-year career as part of a landmark exhibit at Zoo Miami, the white Bengal tiger known as “Carlita” was euthanized on Monday, the zoo announced.

Carlita was born in July 1992 and was transferred to Zoo Miami, where she began her career as part of the Tiger Temple exhibit in February 1994. She was paired with two other typically-colored Bengal tigers, Lyric and Roshe, and her color — or lack of it — helped her stand out and added to her popularity among zoo visitors, said zoo spokesman Ron Magill.

Miami-Dade Looks To Build Theme Park In Backyard (Again)

Developer proposals for a theme park around Zoo Miami are due in April. It will likely take until July before proposals are fully reviewed.

For the second time in less than five years, Miami-Dade County is looking to take its zoo to the next level - assuming the next level is possibly a Main Street USA theme park.

The Miami Herald reports that the county invited developers to propose plans for the vacant land surrounding Zoo Miami. "Basically," writes the Herald,"an open-ended plea for bright ideas, conceptual schemes and - this is key - private financing,"

Zoo Miami Welcomes Two New South African Cheetahs

American Airlines flew in two South African cheetahs to Miami this afternoon. The cheetah brothers did quite a lot of traveling this morning: from South Africa to JFK in New York, and finally to Miami International Airport. The brothers will be reunited at Zoo Miami after being unloaded and released from their crates into a quarantined area.
