Performance Art Piece Questions Human Desire With Abnormal Way To Eat Cake

Wood's performance art piece involves an orifice, a cake, and a bowl of popcorn.

The All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition opening reception recently at the Boca Museum of Art drew in a packed, frenzied crowd to its 62nd-annual showcase featuring 149 multimedia works. But it was the overheard exclamations of “That’s disgusting!” and “I can’t even watch this!” that stood out during the evening’s discourse.

What was so gross? A throng of well-heeled attendees swarmed about, cringing midway through the gallery.  There it was, two flat screens surmounted on a wall playing artist Gabrielle Wood’s video installations Displaced Pleasure.

At the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, it's intermission during a production of "War Horse."

Eric Chirinsky stands at the bar of the Broward Center's new lounge Club Level, drink in hand, watching the Miami Heat battle the Chicago Bulls on a flat-screen TV.

"I just figured I'd check it out and see how our home team was doing tonight," he says.

But his wife, Katarina, isn't focused on pro basketball right now.  She's sitting alone, enjoying a plate of hors d'oeuvres and a glass of bubbly.

A Snowbird's Letter From Carlan Mobile Home Park in Davie

  • Roberta Walker tells us her heart warming story if growing up with Miami and visiting her over the years.

It’s almost snowbird season. The sight of snowbirds escaping the bitter northern cold is common in South Florida. Not so common is a Canadian woman who makes her way to Carlan Mobile Home Park in Davie several times a year to visit her childhood nanny who is now 95 years old.

From Miami-Dade To Broward, The Case For Being Mindful When Renaming Counties

Image of the 'Dade Massacre,' which accelerated the Second Seminole War. There are five different Dade Counties in the US, and a Dade City in Florida.
http://lookingtowardportugal.blogspot.com/

Amid chatter that Broward County is considering changing its name to reflect the county’s biggest city-- Fort Lauderdale-- this all got me thinking about the names that we give to our counties in South Florida.

As time goes forward, the histories of the place names that we know become obscured.  After some amount of time they take a life of their own as names become places, and we scarcely think of the individual.

What's A Better Name: Broward Or Lauderdale?

Bill Andrews from Hollywood says the landmark that best represents Broward is the Broadwalk in Hollywood: "there are plenty of other cities--very nice tourist locations--in Broward besides Ft. Lauderdale."
Bill Andrews

Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca wants to transform Broward County by changing its name.  LaMarca says many outside Florida don't recognize "Broward" and associate Fort Lauderdale with fun in the sun. He plans to propose the name Lauderdale County, an idea that will be debated next week in a function hosted by the Tower Forum, a Broward (soon to be Lauderdale?) non-profit business organization. Miami-Dade changed its name in 1997.

NEWSCAST: Eyeball Appears To Be 'Fishy' In Nature

Big Blue May Belong To Swordfish.
Florida Fish And Wildlife Conservation Commission

The mystery of the giant eyeball is closer to being solved. The softball-sized blue eyeball was found in the sand in Pompano Beach and most likely came from a swordfish. That's the conclusion by the state wildlife research laboratory.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the size and color do match up to that of a swordfish. They will continue genetic testing to see if they can determine what type of swordfish.

Searching for Broward’s Underappreciated Buildings

City Park Municipal Garage

Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Mar-a-Lago National Historic Landmark. City Park Municipal Garage.

Does something from the above list feel out of place?

That just can’t be.
