Sabado Gigante Turns 50

Don Francisco's hit show, Sabado Gigante, turns 50 years old this month.

Sabado Gigante, one of the most famous TV shows among the Hispanic community here in Miami, is also the longest running variety show in television history. It turns 50 this month.

Gigante has been recorded here in Miami at Univision since 1986.

The show has been hosted by Don Francisco, whose real name is Mario Kreutzberger, since it got its start on Chile television.

Rumors are circulating that Fidel Castro has died, which is all too familiar.

Social media has been abuzz today with rumors that Fidel Castro might be dead. As The Miami Herald reports:

Rumors of the retired leader’s alleged passing had been circulating online since Sunday, when Castro did not congratulate Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez on winning reelection.

Obama Adviser Says Campaign Will Make Gains With Miami Hispanics

The Tampa Bay Times chatted with David Plouffe, President Obama's Senior advisor, recently. While polls show the president is struggling right now, Plouffe tells the Times that he's confident Obama will make gains in Florida-- particularly among Miami Hispanics.

Cubans Are Not the Wealthiest Hispanic Americans

Cuban-Americans are no longer the wealthiest Hispanic-Americans in the U.S. leading into this year's presidential election.

Historically, Cubans have been among the wealthiest Americans of Hispanic origin. However, according to a report from the Pew Hispanic Center, that's not true anymore.

According to a Pew report, Ecuadorians, Colombians, Peruvians and Salvadorans, all make more money than Cubans.

Ecuadorians have the highest median household income among these groups, at $50,000. The median household incomes for Colombians ($49,500) and Peruvians ($48,000) are slightly less than that.

The Cuban Sandwich War Is Over, Miami Concedes Defeat

This looks seriously delicious. The question is: Where was it made, Miami or Tampa?

After an incursion by the upstart Miami Cuban community, the people have spoken – Tampa is the true home of the Cuban sandwich.

More than 7,200 people voted at the NPR food blog, “The Salt,” and the results speak for themselves: 57 percent for Tampa, 43 percent for Miami as the true home of the Cuban sandwich.
