Hackathon For Cuba Developers Try To Free The Island's Internet

At LAB Miami in Wynwood this past weekend, local software developers and designers formed teams to compete for the best app that would give Cubans on the island uncensored Internet access, calling it the first ever “Cuba Hackathon.”

The event was organized by Roots of Hope, a network of young professionals working to “empower Cuba’s youth.”

Civic Hacking: Ways To Mine Data For Miami's Good

Miami civic hackers from various backgrounds played with government data all weekend long.

More than 200 coders, designers and onlookers hashed out ideas on how to better use open data from federal and county sources as part of Miami's National Day of Civic Hacking.

Participants can submit their projects by June 30 for the chance to share their ideas at a White House event in the fall.

Five Reasons To Hack For Change In Wynwood On Saturday

On Saturday and Sunday, The LAB Miami will host the first-annual Hack for Change: Miami as part of the National Day of Civic Hacking. The event endeavors to bring together citizens in the spirit of collaboration to develop new technological solutions for some our country’s oldest problems. Or, as the national website puts it, “to do what is most quintessentially American: roll up our sleeves, get involved, and work together to improve our society.”
